Mount Lhotse lies in the eastern part of Nepal beside the Mt. Everest. It rises to 8516 m. above the sea level. Mr. Ernst Reis of Switzerland scaled Mt. Lhotse first on May 18, 1956 via West Face. There are also two other Lhotse mountains, Lhotse Shar (8400m) and Lhotse Middle (8413). Lhotse, which means ‘south peak’, is part of Everest massif, just to the south of Everest. The primary route to Lhotse is via Everest’s South Col, but by 1955, despite the activity on Everest, Lhotse was the highest unclimbed peak in the world.
