Communication to some parts, especially, in the remote mountains is still limited to postal services. There are post offices in every district run by Nepal Government. However, postal services in Nepal are not reliable for sending valuable materials.
The Central Post Office (Tel: 977-01-4227499, 240018) located near Dharahara Tower, opens from (9.00 am to 5.00 pm), Monday through Friday. The counters are open form 7 am to 4 pm and provide stamps, postcards and aerogram. Post Restante is available Monday to Friday p am to 5 pm. Express Mail Service (EMS) is available at the GPO and at Thamel, Basantpur and airport postal counters.
Services offered by the post office include registration and insurance of mail and packages as well as the exchange of IRCs. Airmail of parcels upto 10kg and surface mail upto 20 kg can be booked at the foreign parcel counter from 9am to 2pm, Monday through Friday. Larger parcels are handled by the Foreign Post Office. Postal counters are also situated in Kathmandu airport. Mail should be addressed to: Name, Poste Restante, General Post Office, Kathmandu, Nepal. US citizens may receive mail in c/o the Consular Section of the US Embassy in Kathmandu. Making a REGISTRY post make cost you a bit higher, but you’ll get a receipt from the Post Office, as a token of its responsibility.
Express Mail Service (EMS) is available at the General Post Office,Thamel, Basantpur and airport postal counters in Kathmandu. International courier services such as UPS, DHL, and Skypak have their agents in Kathmandu, but the price they charge can be very expensive.
